Somerset Education Business Awards

23 March 2010

It was a night of celebration to showcase and reward the links between education and business – and schools, colleges, students and business leaders from across Somerset picked up awards.

The 2010 Somerset Education Business Awards were held at the offices of Western Provident Association in Taunton on 23rd March 2010.  The awards are organised by the Somerset Education Business Partnership, part of Connect South West, which is the new company name for Connexions Somerset.

The winning schools, colleges and businesses, came from Bridgwater, Chard, Frome, Highbridge, Taunton and Yeovil.   Students Daniel Mears, James Osborne (Frome), Melissa Bryant, Charlie Harris (Taunton), Hannah Wiggins, Charlotte Turner (Yeovil), and Emily Rowland (Bridgwater) also picked up individual awards.

The awards recognised a huge variety of personal and group achievements throughout the year – from the students who produced a professional DVD on oral hygiene to those who helped design and develop a community garden in Bridgwater.

Somerset Education Business Partnership Manager John Crew said after the event: “It really has been wonderful night – a chance for us to say thank you to all those who have worked so hard throughout the year but also a chance to show to a wider audience just what can be achieved through close links between the classroom and the world of work. “I think we have shown again that Somerset leads the way in this and in spite of the economic recession we have had tremendous support from local businesses.  I know they have benefitted from the links with schools and colleges and so have the students.” All the winners received an engraved glass trophy.

The awards were presented by Andrew Smith, Manufacturing Manager of Numatic International, based in Chard. He paid tribute to the dedication and enthusiasm of all those involved in the projects and encouraged more local companies to get involved with the scheme.

Clinton Rogers, the Somerset Correspondent for BBC Points West, hosted the evening and added: “Tonight we had a taste of what tomorrow’s workforce has to offer and it was deeply encouraging.”
